First and foremost we bring music to life, but music needs people to listen to it so what we do in the community is just as important.
We’re a not-for-profit community organisation, so it’s very important to us to support other community events.
On ANZAC Day each year, we form a marching band to support street parades in and around the Wollongong region, as well as playing hymns and bugle calls at dawn services. We also play on Remembrance Day, supporting the RSL.
We also march and play hymns for church events, and at church-organised markets. You’ll also see us providing entertainment at other community markets throughout the year, and at Wollongong City Council events.
Each band typically performs two major concerts each year, and we sometimes get together with community choirs and orchestras for special concerts. We also perform free concerts at nursing homes and aged care facilities to entertain our senior citizens.
Musical performance sometimes has a more serious side, we regularly compete in the NSW State Band Championships and in the National Band Championships when they come to Sydney.
Our Junior Brass band also competes in the State Championships and the Wollongong Eisteddfod. When we can, we take both junior bands on tour to perform at schools and participate in events like the East Coast Band Championships in Newcastle.
The Junior Brass also has an annual weekend camp to kick off the musical year. They do a lot of rehearsal and sectional work with guest tutors at the camp, and it’s a great way for the kids to make new friends and get to know each other outside the rehearsal room.
We’re proud of everything we do, and the best part is that it’s fun!
